This paper introduces terminology, i.e., [academic] terminology as a new academic field which is located at the boundary among linguistics, logic, theory of existance, information science and specialized areas of science and technology, and in the interdisciplinary area. Terminology, particularly concrete terminology works based on it, play an important role in practical activities of these specialized areas (especially with regard to communication). Terminology either as an academic field or as practical terminology works deals with men's thought, and concept which is element of knowledge and discussion. Moreover, terminology as an academic field studies problems involved in scheme of concept terms. This paper discusses the two search examples against the Chemical Substance Dictionary Files of Chemical Abstracts, CHEMNAME and CHEMDEX. The search keys were structure data complemented by index terms. One was about a chemical compound with partial structure not including heterocyclic ring, which had searching difficulty with these files. Another was about a chemical compound with partial structure including heterocyclic ring, which was easily handled in these files. The former search resulted in much noise, but the latter showed the favorable result such as less search noise, short searching time.
