In the previous paper, the state of affairs of scientific and technical information works in Kansai the state of computerization and consciousness of the staff members engaged are reported in terms of various subjects and industry types. This report examines the same subject from different point of view of stratification. The size of capital influences onlymicrofilming and computerization and computerization and does not affect the number of staff members and communication. Viewed in job ranking aspect, those in administrative position for over five years fully recognize the status and business of their own depart ments from integrative view point, and the lower the position the more centripetal the recognition of their own businesses. The aggressive tackles every problem forward-lookingly, but the questionable expresses partly pessimistic. On-line service is generally favored and unexpectedly many people are studying its adoption in the near future.

There are few research and analysis of literature information in the social sciences, particularly in interdisciplinary study. Taking peace research as an example of interdiscipli nary study, and using Peace Research Abstracts Journal as data base, we examined its classification system, subjects treated, year of publication, and the form of media in the light of information science. In the present first report, general characteristics and tendencies of the above items are summed up. Detailed analyses and correlation of items will be discussed in successive reports.

It is of vital importance to mutually transform Braille and ordinary letters with as minimum human action as possible. There are three necessary conditions. First, Braille input/output equipments are necessary to connect Braille with computers. Secondly, as Japanese Braille does not represent Chinese characters (kanji), it is necessary to create a Braille system for kanji or to transcribe kanji in Japanese Braille. Thirdly, a series of softwares to transform Braille into ordinary letters and vice versa, or mutually between Braille systems. Such problems have been tackled one after another in collaboration with various organizations concerned and the Braille-kanji input/output systems, including automatic kanji writing system for Braille users and automatic Braille writer from ordinary prints , are now almost operational.

The automatic data processing system for internal businesses at the National Tax Administration Agency was first implemented in 1966 and upgraded and expanded several times since then. At present HITAC-M series computer systems are set up at three processing centers in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, under which 164 taxation offices out of total 506offices are organized. The data are centrally processed in batch mode. Each system comprises three subsystems for income tax, corporation tax and credit control, and can compute the amount of taxes, register taxpayers, print out forms and do other related office works. Over 50% of individual and corporate taxpayers are now covered by this system.

Headlines and resumes of industry and company reports taken from the Nihon Keizai, Nikkei Sangyo, Nikkei Ryutsu and other Nikkei newspapers are computer-stored in kanji mode and the newspapers from which the reports are taken are microfiched. The stored items form a system NEEDS-IR retrievable by descriptors in four categories, company, merchandise, operation, and locality. The author details the value of news items for retrospective search purpose and the highly structured retrieval vocabulary system.
