It is true that on-line information retrieval does not only bestow a favor on researchers and engineers, but also advances efficiency of information gathering drastically. However, it is warned that rough information activities might be caused by much relience on its technical aspects. Under these circumstances it has been discussed that printed secondary resources be reviewed. The quantitative evaluation has not established yet. Based on the overseas research data which seems to prove effect of printed secondary resources, and taking the cost into consideration the authors describe that if they are incorporated into on-line information retrieval, the efficient information activities can be attained.

Whether or not regional differentials of information distribution exist in Japan, and if they exist, how and in what aspects they have generated, are main subjects to discuss in this paper. They are evaluated quantitatively based on the existing statistical data in local cities. At the same time the questionnaire was executed to evaluate behavior and consciousness of the habitants in five cities. Nationwide structure of differentials, feelings of differentials which the habitants hold, and the factors forming them were clarified. The progress of this study and its future are mentioned.

The author describes PLANET developed to complement CAPTAlN System which is Japanese edition of Videotex. It employes local data base access method while Videotex does large sized data bases mainly. The details of the development, the such characteristics that although it is originally on-line type, it can be used as package type, and retrieval method which designates the particular categories, are described. The applications are introduced with some concrete examples. The prospects and subjects to be solved are mentioned.
