Current status of the electronic journal publications in China was investigated. Three services, i.e., Tsinghua Tongfang Knowledge Network Technology‘s China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, and VIP Information, are individually make 5,000-9,000 electronic journal titles with 12-18 million articles available online. This volume exceeds total electronic articles available in the western world. Archival journal issues are being digitized, too. Both CNKI and Wanfang Data create citation databases and they are already in service. Electronic articles from Wanfang Data and VIP are already indexed by Google Scholar, and full text links are implemented.

J-STAGE, serviced by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), is an integrated electronic journal platform that hosts more than 350 electronic journal titles as of the end of January, 2007. This paper analyzed 282 journal titles with 110,000 articles which were loaded at the end of March, 2006. The proportions of access routes, whether via tables of contents or via inbound links, differ among research fields of the journals as well as languages used. The influences of authentication to read full article texts upon access to them also differ among research fields of the journals.

COUNTER is an international standard that each vendor is encouraged to comply with, in order to provide their subscribers of their e-journals, databases and other online information services with consistent usage statistics. J-STAGE, an e-journal site operated by JST, has started a usage statistic report service to the subscribers and became compliant to COUNTER at the end of 2006, which was the first to be compliant among the information services operated in Japan. As being a third party against the publisher and subscriber and also having many free-access journals, handling of the subscriber information was a hurdle for J-STAGE. Background of the service implementation and its how-to-use is outlined.
