    Many intellectual property (IP) departments have difficulty in increasing IP assets while decreasing IP business cost under the post-recession economy. A patent analysis such as a patent technology trends research is beneficial for cost-effective patent application. In this article, we describe why the patent trend analysis is indispensable and how to conduct it. Secondary, we introduce a web-based patent analysis service called “Patent Integration” with text mining capabilities. A case study is demonstrated using this Patent Integration service identifying patent classification codes and extracting a population based on the classification codes.

    Ecology Express is an ASP (Application Service Provider) service, focused on delivering "environment" and "energy" related information. The year 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of the service. Majority of the customers are corporations, with its membership comprised approximately 400 companies and 2,000 individuals. Since the establishment of the service, various improvements have been made, such as completeness and immediacy of information and usability, by trial and error. As part of these efforts, the site was renewed dramatically for the third time in September 2008. This article reports the contents of the service of Ecology Express, also explaining main measures took for the third site renewal and future prospects of the site.

    Tracing the citation linkage between patents and scientific research papers is now focused more. Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), as the Funding Agency for promoting technology transfer and innovation, must inform the public about the evidence and evaluation on governmental R&D investment. JST forged a system for the contribution of basic science to technology by tracing the citation linkage between patents and scientific research papers. This article analyzes research results from JST R&D investment based on those citation linkages.
