    CD which was first published in 1981 has been developed as CD-ROM as a form of computer's external random access memory. Extending to the appearance of CD-ROM XA, CD-I, Photo-CD, and Video-CD, CD-ROM has been in center of attention as the representative of package media. There are a variety of standards in CD-ROM; they are the standards in terms of the disc, and the control structure of OS. The application of CD-ROM has been expanding in business market and specialized field. However, many think that center of its future overview lies in the expansion of field by low-price, multi-function, and personalization. It is not exagerating to say that the future of CD-ROM is depended upon people who are called as contents-provider, soft-producers, and creators.

    CD-ROM are getting popularized as a standard digital media, It was presented ten years ago. From viewpoint of a user through the work of searcher, database products are described as a one of various types use of CD-ROM products. Taking up Japanese and overseas primary products, comparison of CD-ROM with online database was described about its merits and demerits, fee, environment, retrieval software and others. CD-ROM products are a media which is so hoped by both users and distributor from now on. The CD-ROM user needs are described referring coexistence with online database.

    There are two types of market for multimedia industry. One is network oriented market where multimedia service is supplied through network and anothor is so-called packaged multimedia products which are supplied in CD-ROM. At this moment, CD-ROM titles are main multimedia products in Japan. In this paper, I have given a general survey of CD-ROM titles which are available for usual PC users in Japan which are grouped in more than 10 different categories.

    The CD-ROM electronic patent bulletin published in Jan. 1993 is Japan. This report deals with the composition and system of hardwares for the bulletin in market, and examples of its application by means of SDI. The report also describes views of the patent office as to the application of down-loaded data because the use of them in company computer network is one of urgent concerns to urgently tackle and “how to put patent strategy into database” based on the database for new development of this bulletin.

    Tokyo Gas Co. , Ltd. developed a system effective for front lines of emergency security, facility management and gas selling operations utilizing user information. It is an integrated system of CD-ROM, movable communication system and databases loaded on a host computer aiming at shortening of time from troop's turning out at emergency to their reaching accident site, smooth operation and improvement of security level, through communication between front lines and stations based on information. This paper introduces how secret is protected from bringing out of data, how progress in operations is managed, searching capabilities, how image description should be speeded up, maintenance of CD-ROM and future development of this system.

    A navigation system has been developed primarily for measuring positioning of vessels. The World War II made electronic engineering drastically improved and technical development of sophisticated instruments, which enabled measurement with high precision, followed. Such technology combined with progress in digital technology is now available for car navigation. Navigation system which used to support vessels is becoming important means which help automobiles run. This paper describes measurement methods in navigation systems, CD-ROM, searching methods, future road traffic system.
