    Using information retrieval system (ORION) and database management system (ADABAS) the Computer Center of Hokkaido University has been operating databases for the purpose of supporting the construction and shared use by general users. The Center is obliged to effectively support and manage the researchers' activities to enable them to construct databases freely by their own and for their own. The Center made command tools for constructing and managing databases in such a way that the process is executed by referring to the database dealing with information of individual databases. Thus supporting and managing functions were systematized. About 30 databases were constructed under this controlling monitor of database system (COMDBS).
