A drug dispensing information system was designed using CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS Registry Numbers. Major types of information treated were of how-to-take the drug, how-to-store the drug, caution while taking the drug, drug interaction, urine color change, feces color change and so on. The use of the registry numbers enables us to incorporate this program easily into the other drug-related information systems. An actual example of this type of program was designed and shown. Original coding systems were designed for how-to-take the drug, how-to-store the drug, etc., information. Information retrieval was made possible not only through a single item but also through a group of items. Reference source was assigned for each piece of information dealt. Chemical names often bring up a chaos and confusion among information searchers and end-users, and it is strongly suggested that some type of universal code should be used for all systems. This project was designed to propose that CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS Registry Numbers should be used for all chemical-substance-related information systems.

Coal Data Base has become available through JOIS in Japan from July, 1982. This paper describes its outline and usage through JOIS. Firstly, the details of how JICST came to introduce the data base are mentioned. Secondly the paper refers to the producer (producing organization), the fields it covers, the materials stored, the amount of data, etc., of Coal Data Base. The explanation of each heading in the data base is given, referring to the output example from JOIS. The usage of Coal Data Base through JOIS is also mentioned. A detailed explanation of keywords and classifications, which are significant tags for on-line searching, is presented with a search example. Lastly, the input of Japanese literature into Coal Data Base is introduced.
