    The provisions of the Personal Information Protection Act for duties of entities handling personal information will be effective on April 1st, 2005. In order to protect the rights and interests of individuals while considering usefulness of the personal information, the provisions stipulate skeleton of rules regarding collection of personal information, control of personal data, actions a data subject can request against retained personal data, and so on. Besides, the Act stipulates to set various complaint-handling systems in order to ensure the effectiveness of the Act as well as supervision measures by Government Ministers and criminal punishments. To comply with the Act, entities handling personal information need to voluntarily consolidate the internal framework referring to guidelines the ministries or agencies formulate.

    Portal sites, like Google, play a crucial role in searching for information available on the Internet, but it has been acknowledged so far that they are not useful to search for scholarly information because most of credible scholarly materials, such as online journals, are not included in their domains to search. Google is now, however, promoting activities to make such scholarly information searchable in partnership with scholarly publishers and electronic journal aggregators. This article reports Google's activities to integrate scholarly information into its database along with a brief description of its mechanism to gather online information and considers their impact on the development of scholarly publishing and academic research.

    Electronic paper is expected as a promising readable medium that joints both merits of the paper and the display. This new medium is also expected to be used for the electronic newspaper and the electronic book; its developments are now eagerly carried on. This paper covers overviews on targets, trend of development, and application fields for electronic paper. Experimental studies on readability are also introduced; this kind of study is expected to lead us to know how to achieve comfortable media with ideal readability.
