    The Science and Technology Agency conducted research on utilization of information technology in future scientific and technological information dissemination systems. This paper describes the outline of this study. Based on the hearing from information specialists, questionnaires to personnels in charge of R & D as well as documentation sections of organizations, and the literature search this report discusses a new type of information distributing system having its origin in prospects on usage forms of scientific and technological information, and the information disseminating technology. As to scientific and technological information for Keihanshin District it also grasps the needs for its use, analyzes the trend in the distributing systems and describes subjects for promoting information and communication in this District.

    The need for “searchers” - adept hands in the art of information retrieval - is increasing nowadays. Searchers have become necessary as the result of the upbeat online database market. The number of database users is rising steeply. There is the urgent need to develop potential users of general information, such as newspaper articles. Simple commands, easy operation, and low prices hold the key to general popularization of databases, and the issue lies in how the industry will get about achieving this task. Nihon Keizai Shimbun has been undertaking a wide range of possibilities with Nikkei News Telecom. Although only two years have passed since its start, results of Nikkei’s efforts are summarized below.

    Nichigai Associates Inc. has begun information services to publish text databases on CD-ROM. In chapter 2, outline of these services and the publication plan of this fiscal year are described. In chapter 3, CD-ROM logical file format common to these services, software to generate files conformed to the format, and software to retrieve CD-ROM files by personal computers are also described.

    The rapid technological innovation and alternation of the economical society have increased the importance of obtaining the accurate information promptly in order to make a timely decision. Therefore, UBE Industries Ltd. has developed “UMATIS”, an information manegement system, since July in 1985, where not only the technical but also manegerial information is accumulated and one can obtain it quickly as occasion demands. In addition to the brief introduction of an outline and the progress of the system, this gives the detailed description of the contents of the registered items, the indexing method, the utilization of retrieval, the manegerial method and so on in the main technical information system. The personal relation information system and the inorgnanic material data base system are also explained briefly.
