    The electronic media will change our long-established methods of presenting information and the results of research and will fundamentally change a major part of the library's function. The place of the library in the world of information will also be fundamentally altered. The author describes the contours of a revolution in scholarship and information services that is now underway. Also this paper describes the consequences of the electoronic revolution for libraries and try to look beyond them.

    Digital library has been widely accepted as an important application area of the global information infrastructure. There are various research and development projects on the digital library in many countries. In this paper, the author firstly describes brief explanation of the digital library projects. Then, he discusses on the following topics which are key to understand the recent digital library researches and developments,(1) new university library environments with digital collections,(2) digital collections, and (3) metadata for document like objects in the Net and collections in digital libraries.

    The National Center for Science Information Systems carried out a survey for academic research activities in December, 1993. This survey was conducted covering all researchers belonging to academic research organizations iucluding universities throughout the country. Replies were obtained from 1,275 organizations (percentage of reply : 93.5%) and 127,127 persons (percentage of reply : 81.7%). This paper describes the outline of the results, including number of researchers for each particular field, number of researchers for each organizations, their academic degrees (doctorates), present research subjects, research activities in overseas, foreign languages used in international conferences and academic societies, academic society affiliations, and awards.

    Through"Internet" which is popularizing and continues to change intensively as a new communication mean and a new communication infrastructure, and through"rovider" which is a contact point between Internet and us, users, a basic way of thinking is described how to make good use of them. At first, what Internet is and what rolls Internet plays are made clear, and then, each roll, each service menu, and each selection standard as personal and organizational providers are introduced and how to make the best use of Internet is discussed.

    Presently Internet grows explosively and a number of private enterprises have participated to it and a lot of socially important information have come to be published on its screens. Accompanying with these facts, criminals who conduct systematically an intrusive act to Internet have been seen sometimes, so it became necessary to secure against such an act. Furthermore, both expectation for online commercial transaction on Internet and demand for materializing technologies to encipher and authenticate in Internet have greatly increased. In such circumstances, comments were made on how to come grips with security on the Internet, its basic knowledges and technologies. Moreover the importance of its security measures was discussed.
