The authors would like to report on the experimental results of lmpact compressive stress-strain property of a carpet by using their several trial models of an impact compressive tester. Very few data obtained from such experiments have been published to date.
A σ
c-ε
c curve of an impact compressive stress-strain property of a carpet rises from the lower side, comparing with a static compression diagram. This is phenomenon is considered to be the reflection of visco-elasticity of a carpet, which is caused by the impact compressive velocity.
As test result has shown that the higher the apparent density of a carpet pile, the greater the capacity of an absorptive power and the smaller the measured maximum stress value.
A cyclic impact compression tests have also shown that a carpet has decreased its thickness with increasing number of impact cycles. However, in this experiment, a carpet has considerably decreased its thickness only up to seventh time of cycles.
All kinds of carpet have increased not only their compressive energy but also their maximum stress value. In other words, carpets gradually lose their impact absorption ability and decrease absorptive function and damage their appearance.
