The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of clothings on the perception of personal traits and conversely, personal-traits on the perception of clothings. Each of 32 clothing words was rated in 7 grades on 11 bi-polar personal-trait pairs (initiative/dependent, intelligent/unintelligent, etc.) and vice versa, each of 22 personal-trait words on 16 bi-polar clothing pairs (warm color/cool color, feminine/masculine, etc.).
Female students (n=418) from 8 junior colleges were assigned to each of 8 groups and each group evaluated some of the clothings on the personal-trait scales and some of the personal-traits on the clothing scales. Each subject was also arranged to rate one of a personal-trait pair or a clothing pair. The results were analyzed by using T-tests to determine significant differences between their ratings of hi-polar personal-trait pair or of bi-polar clothing pair. Out of 176 combinations of 16 clothings and 11 personal-traits, significant difference existed in 80% and 66% of the combination for mean ratings of personal-trait pairs and of clothing pairs respectively.
By the application of Hayashi's Quantification Model III to the personal-trait ratings on the clothing scales, the clothings and personal-trits were clssified into 8 types. The results revealed that there vvere some perceived relationships between the groups of clothings and those of personal-traits.
