A survey was conducted in 1983 among 46 academic libraries and 80 special libraries to elucidate the extent of the migration from secondary journals to the corresponding online databases. Significant difference was found between above two types of libraries in terms of the impact of online databases on subscriptions to printed publications. First of all, online databases were more dominant media than the other in special libraries while both were used equally in academic libraries. As the result, cancellation of printed materials were reported more in the former than in the latter. Secondly, discontinuation of subscriptions to some printed publications were mainly caused by migration in special libraries and by the reduction in information service budgets in academic libraries. Lastly, many libraries irrespective of types predicted that migration might be seen for particular publications, while others would still coexist with online databases.
