Libraries in the United States are now experiencing another phase of rapid change brought by the sudden invasion of micro-computers. Their versatility has made available not only capabilities for word processing and producing spread sheets but also introduced new approaches to large research libraries’ information networks. OCLC’s microenhancers are one example of what is now available. They can be used for retrospective conversion, provide instruction for the use of and function as front end terminals for large online catalogs. Various new ideas for the application of micro-computers will bring interesting developments in library automation.

Japan Agricultural Library Council has cooperated with JICST in making abstracts of “Abstracts of Science and Technology in Japan, Agro-Industries” published by JICST over these five years. Taking this opportunity of starting computerized edition of the Title and changing the coverage the author and others reviewed the abstracting work so far. The outline of the Title is first described. Then the number of journals and citations covered in it by subject are compared with those of Japan Agriculture Literature Article Index of which main users are agricultural scientists and researchers and which is used as reference tool of selecting papers to be included in English titles. The characteristics and points to be improved are explained. Characteristics of agriculture literature, which are seen through making English abstracts are also described.

A survey of library collections was conducted to characterize trends during the period of 1982 through 1984 in library acquisitions and collections in 72 medical libraries across the nation. The periodicals whose acquisitions either ceased or started in more than 3 libraries were identified by country and journal subject. The survey revealed a growing prominance of journals published in USA whereas German and French titles steadily dwindled during the period. In addition, the withdrawal of major abstracts journals such as “Chemical Abstracts” was also noted. Journal collections and acquisitions have been enhanced with the establishment of libraries of medicine and biology, though, in the face of fiscal constraints, acquisition programs need to be coordinated on a regional basis to meet the user requirements.
