This is the lecture paper presented at the Research Exchange Center of the Science and Technology Agency, Tsukuba City as an event for the Science and Technology Week. It describes current status of machine translation system which is still immature in terms of quality and manipulation, and also its history from the beginning to practical use. Two representative methods of machine translation which are currently executed, transfer method and pivot method, are explained based on sample sentences along some translation cases. Then showing evaluation of translation experiment the author himself conducted he points out that precise/accurate original sentences can produce precise/accurate translated ones also in machine translation.

Electronic filing has become popular, where information is recorded/stored on magnetic or optical recording media. There are two kinds of recording formats, codes and images. Magnetic recording media include floppy disks, magnetic disks, magnetic tapes. Replay only type, postscript adding type and rewriting available type media are categorized under optical recording media. Each of recording method/media has its own advantages, so that we need to choose it according to our own objectives. The author describes information retrieval systems of electronic files, i.e., documents prepared by a word processor and optical disks, using general purpose computers and communication networks.
