This lecture discusses several issues on preparing research articles and oral presentations in native-like English. Actual examples, which we often write, points out why they are not understandable by native English speakers. The second part of this lecture describes the structural difference between Japanese and English, patent articles for filling, useful expressions at oral presentation, and some remarks on translation companies and translators in Japan.

Research grants are the very important resources not only for the development of science and technology, but also for the improvement of the people's life and the increase of the industrial competitive power. It is required for the institutions allocating the funds for the grant program to provide effective systems. By studying the benchmarks of the foreign grant system, we can get some hints for the better improvement of the current grants in Japan. However, it is necessary to grasp the broader thought rather than just knowing the partial characteristics of the foreign systems. During this report, I would like to suggest a number of possibilities to improve the grant systems of Japan in the future.

This paper describes the contents and format of a"Database of Elderly People's Physical Functions," which has recently been opened to the public via the Internet. This database was built to provide information for the design of industrial products, and includes data on elderly people's physical functions, such as vision, hearing, physical movement and skin sensation. The database is for the benefit of all who wish to use it, but we especially hope that it will help those who are working to create products and environments that satisfy the needs of the elderly. The database consists of three parts: lifestyle activity analysis, reference materials, and physical function data. The reference materials include a number of existing research papers on the physical functions of the elderly as examples of search results that can be retrieved by the use of relevant keywords. The physical function data include measurements taken by surveys which were conducted to reflect actual living conditions.
