More than 5 million people in Japan sense colors differently because of the diversity in genes and diseases in the eyes. They have problems of distinguishing certain combination of colors, noticing red signs, and telling color names. Hardware and software simulation tools are provided to experience such difficulties. When designing documents and products that use color, it is important to take color universal design into consideration by choosing least confusing combination of colors, conveying information redundantly with colors and different shapes, and displaying color names, so that the information should be recognized by as diverse people as possible.

This article reports on the results and significance of a pilot academic e-books project carried out at the Keio University Libraries for fiscal 2010 to 2012 to assess the viability of a new model of the libraries providing all the campuses with accesses to Japanese academic books digitized jointly with academic publishers and cooperative firms. It focuses on the experimental use of digitized books, highlighting the students’ attitudes and expectations towards e-books as found from surveys. Some major findings include the following. Users have a strong demand for digitized readings that are rather lookup-oriented than learning-oriented, with greater value placed on the functionalities of federated full-text searching, reading on a screen, and accessing the desired chapter direct from table of contents. They also want an online space in which to manage different forms of digitized learning resources. We investigated the potential of e-books and new type of textbooks as educational infrastructures based on the results of experiment. Japan’s university libraries should need to engage actively in the mass digitization of academic books to be adaptive to the change in the ways research, study and teaching are conducted. We plan to start a joint experiment with other university libraries to develop a practical model for the use of e-books.

Research fronts analysis identifies emerging areas of research through observing co-clustering in highly-cited papers. This article introduces the concept of research fronts analysis, explains its methodology and provides case examples. It also demonstrates developing research fronts in Japan by looking at the past winners of Thomson Reuters Research Fronts Awards. Research front analysis is currently being used by the Japanese government to determine new trends in science and technology. Information professionals can also utilize this bibliometric as a research evaluation tool.

In a big wave of globalization Japanese companies are forced to launch their own boats. On the other hand a lot of patent litigation have occurred between IT companies in US and Europe. Under such circumstances what is going on for a world of patent information, how the patent information of various countries should be served and what are needed for a person who is engaged in patent were studied. It is concluded that unifying the patent information of various countries and ability to communicate with people of foreign countries from heart to heart are required for a person who is engaged in a world of intellectual property.

Integration of life science databases scattered around Japan used to be tackled by individual related ministries. In order to make this an all-nation task, four ministries in Japan, MEXT, MHLW, MAFF and METI, started systematic inter-ministry collaboration in FY2011, and have been promoting database integration through the four steps: database catalog, cross-search, archiving and restructuring. This article introduces the current state of these four steps, and mentions issues in each step, such as data sharing and RDFizing.
