The authors performed the operation to anastomose the oesophagus and the jejunum of the dogs then isolated the stomach from diet eaten, and observed the gastric gland cells, the pancreatic cells, the epithelial cells of the duodenum, the liver cells and the cells of the adrenal cortex. These observations were compared with the ones obtained in the normal dogs and the changes of cell-function have been investigated, then the
productin theory of FUJIE, which has been established according to the experimental results on rats, was discussed on the dogs.
It is noted that the production and the discharge of the secretory substance in the peptic and the parietal cells must be inferior even after the administration of diet, because the figures of the secretory function showed no remarkable changes according to the administration. Zymogen granules of the pancreatic cells accumulated in the cells in spite of the inferior functional figures of the secretion (both the production and the discharge). Here the discharge of zymogen granules will be considered more inferior than its production. The specific vacuoles in the subnuclear portion of the duodenal epithelial cells, which FUJIE believed
secretin, show little fluctuation after the diet administration in the operated dogs and the vacuoles in the subepithelial tissue are generally a few. That is, both the production of the vacuoles in the cells and the discharge of them from the cells are believed inferior.
The inferior production and discharge of the secretory substance in the gastric gland cells, the inferior production of zymogen granules in the pancreatic cells and the one of the specific vacuoles in the duodenal epithelial cells are completely explainable with the inferior discharge of
productin vacuoles observed in the surface cells of the gastric mucosa and with the application of the
productin theory of FUJIE. The inferior discharge of zymogen granules in the pancreatic cells is coincident to the low discharge of the specific vacuoles in the duodenal epithelial cells, which was concluded from the intracellular and extracellular observations, and it has no inconsistency under the hypothese (FUJIE) in which the content of the specific vacuoles is believed
secretin. However the histamine value in the blood decreases after the diet administration, it is contrary to the results in the normal dogs, and these values are not satisfactory to the above observations on the cell-function. On the other hand, in the liver cells, the abnormal transformation of plastosomes is marked and the functional degeneration can be demonstrated according to the fluctuation of glycogen and fat in the cells. The cell-structure of the adrenal cortex in the operated dogs demonstrates the more superior secretion of its hormone than in the normal dogs. It is natural in the stress-theory of SELYE when the operation is regarded as the stress. However there still remains an important investigation to demonstrate the fact that the points which have conflicted with the
productin theory in the operated dogs, such as low histamine value in the blood after the diet administration and the functional degeneration of the liver cells, have a relationship with the surplus hormone secreted from the adrenal cortex or not.
