Experiments at an e
+e
- linear collider are now seriously considered to be the next step of frontier high energy experiments. First we give an elementary introduction to the physics motivation and the primary aim of a future e
+e
- linear collider. Then we focus on the experiment in the energy region close to the tt pair-production threshold. This is planned as a first stage experiment in the linear collider operation. We review the rich physics to be covered there with an emphasis on key theoretical ideas.

Photoinduced phase transitions (PIPT) have currently attracted interest because they may offer the possibility to build optical memory devices etc. The dynamical properties of PIPT are also important from the viewpoint of the analysis of relaxation phenomena. We mainly study PIPT in spin-crossover compounds. Many studies have been devoted to elucidate the nature of spin-cross-over compounds, in which a transition between the low spin state and the high spin state can be induced by a change in temperature, pressure, etc. PIPT is expected to provide a new mechanism to control electronic and magnetic states by external fields. The mechanism of PIPT is often discussed from the viewpoint of an adiabatic potential. However, it has been found that cooperative phenomena play an important role in PIPT and one has to take into account the thermodynamic stability of macroscopic states. We study mechanisms of reversible switching between stable and metastable states by illumination. We introduce models of interacting spin-crossover molecules and investigate the effect of illumination on these models. The dynamics of the order parameter under the influence of illumination is studied by making use of a stochastic dynamics. It is clarified that the two-way switching is possible when the system has appropriate multi-time scales of the dynamical processes, even if illumination causes only a non-symmetry breaking perturbation.

Yohkoh, a Japanese solar-physics satellite, was launched in August 1991 and has been successfully observing solar corona in X-rays and gamma-rays for more than ten years till December 2001. The length of observation nearly corresponds to a full solar activity cycle. Yohkoh has revealed that solar corona is very dynamic, that magnetic reconnection plays an essential role in the energy release mechanism of solar flares, that it is commonly manifested in various coronal activity, such as microflares, X-ray jets, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and found that coronal heating itself might have close relationship with magnetic reconnection. Yohkoh's excellent observations have stimulated researches of magnetic reconnection in other related physics fields, and appreciated the launch of next Japanese solar satellite, Solar-B.

Water is found to be distributed mainly in grain boundaries in shallower parts of the earth (crust) by infrared microspectroscopy. Thin film water in grain boundaries might have an ice-like "harder" character than normal free liquid water. In deeper parts of the crust, with grain growth at higher temperatures, the decrease in water content and grain boundary width would result in disconnected "hard" water in grain boundaries with high viscosity and low permeability. This "hard" water might therefore be a possible origin of earthquakes. The chemistry (NaCl vs. CO
2) of water affects greatly the "hardness" of water and could control earth's dynamics. This paper review the geodynamics, which has been considered by macroscopic mechanical phenomena, with a new microscopic physicochemical point of view based on water structure.

Recent progress in phase coherent optical frequency measurement based on SI second has brought about unprecedented significance for the development of frequency standards in optical region. We present an idea of "optical lattice clock" that allows to interrogate millions of quantum absorbers separately prepared in the Lamb-Dicke region. We discuss the implementation of light shift cancellation technique and demonstrate a high-resolution spectroscopy of strontium atoms trapped in a 1D optical lattice.
