At low temperatures, water forms two amorphous states so-called low-density amorphous ice (LDA) and high-density amorphous ice (HDA). The density and the local structure are distinct between LDA and HDA. Recent low-temperature and high-pressure experimental studies relating to supercooled liquid water and amorphous ices suggest that liquid water is connected with two amorphous ices thermodynamically and that the nature of LDA-HDA transformation may be first order. This indicates that two distinct liquid waters exist at low temperatures, so-called the water polyamorphism. In this paper, we introduce recent experimental studies that show the validity of water polyamorphism, and discuss the experimental problems of water polyamorphism.

In order to observe the quantum phases revealed in atomic wave function, several kinds of polarizing atom interferometers have been developed using the interaction of light with thermal atomic beams or the cold ensemble of atoms trapped by laser cooling. By using those interferometers, the Aharonov-Casher effect, the scalar Aharonov-Bohm effect and Berry's phase have been observed and confirmed by comparing the phases of the wave packets having different magnetic quantum numbers.

Einstein's equations are nonlinear, partial differential, and simultaneous. It is impossible to derive an analytic solution which describes a dynamical phemomemon in nature. However, it has been required to develop a method for the solutions to clarify general relativistic astrophysical phenomena which can be observed by large telescopes and detectors. The field which develops methods for numerically solving Einstein's equations is referred to as "Numerical relativity." In this article, I first explain the reason that the numerical relativity is needed and its outline. Then, the latest progress is reviewed focusing particularly on the results obtained in 2005.

It has been considered that an observation of the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) may be difficult in high-temperature d-wave superconductors due to the presence of the low energy nodal quasiparticle excitations. Contrary to this naive conception, our theory and experiment have shown that the effects of the nodal quasiparticles are not strong enough to obscure the observation of the MQT. In this article, we show the theory and the first experimental observation of the MQT in the high-temperature superconductor intrinsic Josephson junctions.

The Swift satellite, successfully launched in November 2004, is dedicated to observe cosmic gamma-ray bursts. Swift is not only detecting a gamma-ray burst but also observing its afterglow in X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical wavelengths by autonomously slewing the satellite to its position. In this article, I review the latest scientific results of the gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift.

The resonant X-ray scattering at the K-edge of transition metals is one of the most powerful tools to investigate spacially varying long-range orders by observing the scattering intensities at forbidden Bragg spots. The present article elucidates the mechanism of the scattering intensities and the relation to order parameters on the basis of ab-initio band structure calculations. The scattering intensities can be understood from the viewpoint of the delocalized property of transition-metal 4p wavefunction.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables not only nano scale imaging but also a force spectrometric analysis for molecular structure or inter (intra) molecular interactions. We have developed a technology for manipulating living cells using an ultrathin needle (nanoneedle) controlled by AFM system without damage to the cell. The force curve observation informs us whether needle can be penetrated into cell or not. Here we present basic findings about the most suitable diameter and shape of nanoneedle.
