KEKB, the B-Factory at High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) recently achieved the luminosity of 1×10
34cm
-2s
-1. This luminosity is two orders higher than the world's level at 1990 when the design of KEKB started. This unprecedented result was made possible by KEKB'S innovative design and technology in three aspects-beam focusing optics, high current storage, and beam-beam interaction. Now KEKB is leading the luminosity frontier of the colliders in the world.

High-pressure investigation of condensed matter forms a wide and interdisciplinary field of science including studies on materials in the deep interior of planets, strongly correlated electronic systems and biomaterials. High-pressure-experimental studies are nowadays strongly supported by computer simulations based on the electronic state theory, by which we can predict structural transformations of crystals under pressure. The present state of the methods and their applications are reviewed.

Strong X-rays from the coma of the "cold" comets have recently been observed and their intensive studies are under way. It has been concluded that the main origin is due to the electron capture collisions of "slow" highly charged ions in solar winds with neutral atoms/molecules in the coma. In such collisions an electron is captured into highly excited state of the ions and then, on the way to the stabilization through cascades, not only X-rays but also EUV and UV photons are emitted. We also discuss the present situations of basic atomic collision processes relevant to understanding of such X-ray observations from the coma of comets.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in a spin-ladder cuprate Sr
2Ca
12Cu
24O
41 has not been studied on a microscopic level thus far although the superconductivity was already discovered in 1996. We have improved high-pressure technique with a large high-quality crystal, and succeeded in studying the superconductivity using
63Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We found that the superconductivity possesses a s-wave like character in the meaning that a finite gap exists in the quasi-particle excitation.

Manipulating atoms and fabricating desired atomic structures would be of great importance for future electronics. Structures of those artificial objects, however, may not be formed as designed, because of electronic and structural relaxations. We have fabricated one-atom-wide structures with various atomic lengths using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and examined structural relaxations. Based on the STM results and first-principals theoretical calculations, we report on length-dependent structural relaxations in these structures and effects of odd-even issues and atom-wire edges.
