The arithmetic aspects of quantum chaos are surveyed. In particular the relations between zeta functions and quantum chaos are discussed. In the earlier sections we recall the notion of fundamental groups, arithmetic manifolds, explicit formulas, prime number theorem and the trace formulas. Whereas in the later sections we explain the results on quantum ergodicity, and then report on the recent developments on the relation between the theory of zeta functions and random matrix theory.

Characteristics of dislocations and plastic deformation of fullerene crystals were reviewed, especially in C
60 and C
70 crystals. Characteristics of dislocations in C
60 crystals with the fee structure are as follows: The Burgers vector is 1/2<110> and the slip system is as same as that of typical fee metal crystals in spite of large Burgers vectors. The plastic deformation in C
60 and C
70 crystals was controlled by dislocation mechanism. Especially, micro-hardness in both crystals indicated the hardening effects under illumination of light. We called this phenomenon photo-induced indentation hardening.

Atom wires and Molecular bridges over nano-scale electrodes are fundamental elements of molecular electronics using individual molecules. Recent development of methods of theoretical analyses for such systems are introduced focused on quantum transport properties. For atomic wires, mechanism of quantum conductance, effect of the wire shape, distribution of applied bias voltage are discussed as well as eigen channel concept. For molecular bridges, effect of the contact structure between the molecule and the electrodes, and induced large loop current are discussed using various case studies.

Recently, a new magnetic state called "spin ice" with a macroscopically degenerate ground state was discovered in geometrically frustrated pyrochlore magnets. We report another macroscopically degenerate state called the "kagome ice" on the 2D kagome lattice perpendicular to the [111] direction in the presence of moderate magnetic fields along [111]. Interestingly, this macroscopic degeneracy is also lifted by increasing magnetic fields through a liquid-gas-type first-order phase transition below a critical temperature of ∼0.4K.

A single molecule of F
1-ATPase has been shown to be a rotary molecular motor powered by free energy obtained by hydrolysis of ATP. It has been widely believed that another molecular motor, F
0, is necessary to make F
1 work as an ATP synthase. It was demonstrated that reverse rotation of the minimal subunits, α
3β
3γ, of the F
1 motor in the presence of ADP and inorganic phosphate leads to synthesis and release of ATP into the medium.

The filled-skutterudite PrO
S4Sb
12 has been attracting much attention because of the fact this is the only Pr-based heavy-fermion superconductor. Our muon spin relaxation measurements have revealed spontaneous appearance of static internal magnetic fields below the superconducting transition temperature. This observation provides unambiguous evidence for "the breaking of time-reversal symmetry" in the superconducting state.
