The Large Helical Device is a confinement device of high temperature and density plasma using the Larmor motion of electron and ions. Since the start of LHD experiment in 1998, plasma confinement performance (how large an energy and high a central temperature and density can be achieved for a given heating power, like a mileage of automobile) has been improved and is approaching the conditions of nuclear fusion. While the car mileage can be varied only by a factor of two depending on the driving technique, the plasma confinement performance can be improved by an order of magnitude depending on the operation. This is because the temperature gradient increases by an order of magnitude associated with the change of the flow pattern from vortex to laminar flow, which determines the confinement performance. The most advanced studies to clarify the physics mechanism of the transition phenomena of the plasma flow pattern and temperature will be discussed in this article.

The MEG experiment, designed and proposed by Japanese physicists, is being carried out at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland, in collaboration with physicists from Italy, Switzerland, Russia and U.S.A. The experiment will make an extensive search for a muon's two-body decay into an electron and a gamma ray, μ→eγ, which is prohibited in the Standard Model of elementary particles, to explore Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories. This article gives a brief description of the MEG experiment with an emphasis on the innovative experimental techniques developed to achieve the unprecedented experimental sensitivity.

In the two-body decay of the B meson to the K meson and the π meson, direct CP violation arises from interference of two decay amplitudes. While this phenomena is a characteristic phenomena predicted by the Kobayashi-Maskawa model, as larger data sample have been collected at the B factory experiments, the difference of the CP asymmetry between the neutral and charged B mesons become more evident. The difference cannot be explained theoretically, known as "Kπ" puzzle. While no clear conclusion can be drawn, it may indicate a new physics beyond the standard model.

We have demonstrated a non-destructive and on-line radiotracer method for diffusion studies in lithium ionic conductors, by using, as a tracer, the short-lived α-emitting radioisotope of ^8Li from TRIAC (Tokai Radioactive Ion Accelerator Complex). The method has been successfully applied to measure the lithium diffusion coefficients in a typical defect-mediated lithium ionic conductor of LiGa, well demonstrating that the method is very effective to measure the diffusion in the micrometer regime per second. Anomalous composition-dependence of Li diffusion coefficients in LiGa was observed; the stoichiometric LiGa showed the highest diffusivity of Li. The anomaly was discussed qualitatively in terms of the formation of defect complex and the interaction between the constituent defects. The ordering of the Li vacancies in the Li-deficient LiGa was observed for the first time in terms of the Li diffusion by the present method, and its thermodynamic aspect was discussed.

LEP experiment has set the lower limit on the standard model (SM) Higgs boson mass, 114GeV. Since there is the naturalness problem in the Higgs sector of the SM, we expect that the Higgs boson interactions can be modified in the physics beyond the SM. In this article, we consider the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), and reanalyzed the LEP limits in the general MSSM, and we point out the possibility of the light Higgs boson, which has not been discussed much in the past.

Recently, non-gaussianity of the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background has attracted a great deal of interest as a powerful probe of the early universe. By using non-gaussianity, we can probe the aspects of the origin of the temperature anisotropy that can not be probed by other observables. I will explain what we can learn about physics of the early universe if or if not non-gaussianity is detected in the future.
