The presence of dark matter in our Universe is one of the biggest mystery in the modern cosmology as well as particle physics. I will give a review on how dark matter can be searched through observation of high-energy cosmic rays. In particular I will focus on the recent PAMELA result on the positron fraction and its implication for dark matter.

An elementary account is given of the renormalization-group (RG) method as a powerful method for an asymptotic analysis of differential equations, especially for the reduction of evolution equations. In this method, the invariant manifold and reduced differential equation are simultaneously derived by constructing the envelope of perturbative solutions involving secular terms. We show that the RG equation may be identified as the envelope equation. The reduction theory based on the RG method as formulated in the present report actually well corresponds to the Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolsky theory for nonlinear oscillators and also Kuramoto's formulation of the reduction theory of the evolution equations.

There are large demands for high-resolution, high-speed, and high-sensitivity radiation imaging sensor in many fields. To fulfill these demands, it is indispensable to combine the sensor and the readout electronics in a chip, but this was difficult to achieve in existing technologies. However this long time dream of developing monolithic radiation detector become possible by using Silicon-On-Insulator technology. We describe the status of SOI imaging sensor development and remaining issues.

This article presents the results of thermal conductivity and heat capacity measurements for the prototypical relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg_<1/3>Nb_<2/3>)O_3-xPbTiO_3 (PMN-xPT). The thermal properties show systematic evolution from glasslike to crystalline behavior with PT doping, demonstrating that these measurements probe the nanoscale polar structures in relaxor ferroelectrics.

Superstring theory often leads to a mysterious equality between two quantities which can be defined without referring to superstring theory. After briefly explaining how such an equality can be derived, we discuss a concrete one between the norm of the coherent state of two-dimensional conformal field theory and the statistical mechanics of four-dimensional instantons.

Study of non-thermal emission from celestial objects is crucial to understand how cosmic rays are accelerated and where the acceleration takes place. It also gives us information on how the non-thermal energy contributes to the total energy of the universe. Hard X-ray (above 10keV) observations enable us to discriminate the non-thermal emission from the thermal emission, which often dominates the X-ray spectra from high-energy objects even if particle acceleration is taking place there. The Suzaku X-ray satellite covers a wide energy band from 0.3keV up to 600keV and achieves the highest-ever sensitivity in the hard X-ray domain at around several tens of keV. Here we report recent Suzaku observations of non-thermal phenomena in Supernova Remnants, Gamma-ray Binaries, and Magnetars.

For gold contacts, the conductance histogram shows the peaks at 1,2,3 and 4G_0, where G_0 is the quantized unit of conductance. However, the conductance evolution during stretching a gold contact does not always show clear steps of such quantized conductance values. Recently, using a ultra high vacuum transmission electron microscope combined with a scanning tunneling microscope, we have found that the conductance evolution depended on the axis direction. A gold contact with the axis along the <110> direction showed the integer times the quantized unit of conductance. And also, it became gold atomic sheet, resembling gold (111) lattice, as a stable structure below 3G_0. The quantum number of conductance was equal to the number of atomic rows in gold atomic sheet.
