Recently there have been many progresses towards realization of highly quantum-coherent two-level systems in Josephson-junction circuits. The latest results showed coherent time of an order of microseconds. Researches on varieties of Josephson-junction quantum bits are reviewed, and problems to be solved are discussed.

New kinds of plasmas that consist of oppositely-chargedions of equal mass (e.g., C
60
+-C
60
-) or different mass (e.g., A
+-C
60
-, A: alkali metals) are generated through ionization, electron attachment, and diffusion of carbon-allotrope fullerenes in a magnetic field. In these plasmas, electrons are minority species. A novel approach to control material structures on the nanometer scale is performed taking advantage of fundamental plasma physics phenomena, such as the Coulomb interactions between charged particles and the acceleration/deceleration of ions by stable plasmasheath electric fields in these new kinds of plasmas. We have succeeded in forming dimers of coalescing fullerenes, fullerenes that encapsulate alkali metalsinside their cages, carbon nanotubes that contain straight chain-like atoms or molecules inside, and carbon nanotubes that encapsulate a junction of fullerene molecules on one side and alkali-metal atoms on the other.

Metal-insulator transition of a doped-semiconductor is one of the representatives of the Mott-Anderson transition, in which both the electron-electron correlation and disorder play important roles. In this article, we review critical exponents of the electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and correlation and localization length revealed experimentally with doped-semiconductors.

A wide range of correlated metals exhibit a metallic conduction regardless of their high resistivity values exceeding the Mott criterion. Such a "bad metallic" behavior suggests the breakdown of the conventional Bloch-Boltzmann transport. Here, we examine the optical spectra of prototypical bad metals, La
1-xSr
xMnO
3 and La
2-xSr
xCuO
4. They suggest that at high temperatures the correlated charge carriers are in a novel electronic state, "dynamical" localization.

A new method for the mutual rhythm synchronization is derived. In this method, one variable to describe a limit cycle oscillator is replaced with the linear coupling of the same type ofvariables of individual oscillators. Thus, the globally synchronization of limit cycle oscillators can be achieved. This way of coupling between oscillators is the mathematical generalization of biological receptors of the cellular slime mold.

Magnetic moments of R
3+ ions of R
2Ti
2O
7 (R = Ho, Dy) with large Ising anisotropy providethe problem of the geometrical frustration which is (almost) equivalent to that of solid H
2O. To investigate what kind of magnetic state is realized in these systems at low temperature, we have carried out neutron diffraction experiments on a single crystal of Ho
2Ti
2O
7. The observedcorrelation pattern can be reproduced by the molecular field treatment and the Monte-Carlo simulation, where the dipolar interaction plays an important role. Although the degeneracy is, strictly speaking, mostly lifted due to theinteraction, the system does not exhibit themagnetic ordering. Instead, with decreasing temperature, before reaching the long range ordered state, it gradually goes into the glassy state, as a result of the coexistence of many spin clusters which have short range magnetic order with different but almost degenerated energies.
