The appearance of radar and laser gauging techniques has enabled us to measure the distance from the earth to other planets precisely. Recently, these techniques have been drastically improved, however due to these improvements, a new problem has arisen, that is, from the analysis of high precision planetary radar and spacecraft ranging data, Astronomical Unit(AU) increases with respect to meters as 15±4[m/century]. But, what kind of thing does the increase of AU mean? We will first describe the meaning and determination of AU, and then explain this problem in detail.

Dramatic progress has been made in the study of the maximally supersymmetric four-dimensional gauge theory in the last five years. What is remarkable is that analytic solutions valid over the whole coupling region have been proposed and tested for general non-supersymmetric excitations. It brings great advances to the test of the conjectured duality between this gauge theory and a ten-dimensional superstring theory whose background contains an anti-de Sitter spacetime. The key to these developments is the structure of two-dimensional integrable models discovered in both theories. In this article, we describe how such structure emerges from higher-dimensional theories and what one can solve by making use of it.

We are examining the method of selective dichlorination from polyvinylchloride(PVC) involved in plastic wastes by dielectric heating with microwave. Since only PVC has high dielectric loss coefficient among major plastic materials, selective heating can be realized even in a mixture. In spite of very simple physical concept of this entire process, basic physical parameters and computational methods were not available, and we had no other way to obtain and construct them by ourselves. This situation may be due to the complex nature of plastic materials in object which are varieties of mixtures of polymers, plasticizer, and other additives. We describe the recent results of our project as a subject in physics concerning environmental technology.

In 2002, we reported a theoretical calculation and concluded that public exposure to mobile phones can be enhanced by microwave reflection in public spaces. In this article, we show our recent study that experimentally confirms our previous study. We discuss a role of fundamental physics and the social responsibility of physicists in environmental studies.
