VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) is a project aiming at drawing a three-dimensional map of our Milky-way Galaxy by measuring positions and sky motions of astronomical maser sources with accuracy of 10 microarcsecond. For the purpose, newly designed radio telescopes with 20 m aperture diameter and dual-beam receiving systems were constructed at four sites spread over Japanese Islands (Mizusawa in Iwate, Iriki in Kagoshima, Ogasawara Islands belonging to Tokyo and Ishigakijima Island in Okinawa). Scientific targets of VERA include mass determination of the dark gravitating matter in our Galaxy, direct calibration of the period-luminosity relation of Miras and revealing the barred structure at the central bulge.

Recently, an “intermediate mass” black hole (IMBH) was found in the central region of galaxy M82 through observations made by ASCA, Chandra and SUBARU. This is the first finding of a black hole with the mass more than 100 solar mass but significantly less than 1 million solar mass, and, as such, has completely changed our understanding of the formation process of massive blackholes. We describe our new scenario in which IMBHs serve as the “missing link” between small and massive black holes. IMBHs first form in young compact star clusters through runaway merging of massive stars. While these IMBHs are forming, the host star clusters sink toward the galactic nucleus through dynamical friction, and upon evaporation deposit their IMBHs near the galactic center. The IMBHs then form binaries and eventually merge via gravitational radiation, forming an SMBH.

After the discovery of the high temperature superconductivity, anomalous behaviors of conductivity and / or magnetic properties in transition-metal oxides have attracted much interest. Recently we found strong ultrafast optical nonlinearity in a one-dimensional cuprate. To elucidate relationship between the strong nonlinearity and large electron correlation or low-dimensionality of this material, we performed femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. We also discuss the applicability to ultrafast optoelectronics.
