Protostars, the first stage of stellar evolution, are born in a dense core of a molecular cloud with temperature of about 10 K. X-rays can be emitted from a high temperature plasma of 10
6-10
8K, hence may not be expected from protostars. Nature, however, is much more imaginative than we are. The Japanese X-ray satellite ASCA found X-rays from a few protostars. The US satellite Chandra successively found that X-rays are common in most of the young stars. Many protostars show flare-like events similar to our sun, hence the X-rays are attributable to solar type magnetic activities. The X-ray work should finally lead to our deep understanding of the evolution and structure of young stars and planets. This paper overviews the pioneering results in the unique waveband, the X-ray.

Revolutionary development has been recently found in piezoelectric materials. These are Pb-based complex perovskite oxides. In particular, the morphotropic boundary of relaxor and PbTiO
3 complex exhibits huge piezoelectric response. The origin of the phenomenon is ascribed by the symmetry lowering which induces smooth polarization rotation. This report summarizes the experimental results and ab initio and phenomenological approaches to this problem.

Studies on extra dimensions have been intensively carried out with an expectation that our 4-dimensional world must be understood as a system with a surprisingly simple and beautiful structure from the viewpoint of higher-dimensional world. In this article, we report the progress of researches on the following subjects based on theories on a higher-dimensional space-time; towards a unification of forces, search for an origin of space-time, solution to energy-scale hierarchy problems and exploration of a mechanism of symmetry breakdown.

A superdeformed rotational band has been observed in the spherical doubly magic, self-conjugate nucleus,
40Ca. This finding was made by using the latest generation of γ-ray spectrometer, Gammasphere, with the charged particle detector, Microball. Increased sensitivity obtained by these detectors has made it possible to identify a new region of superdeformation in the N=Z light mass nuclei, and provided fascinating prospects in the study of high-spin states in this region.

A nontopological soliton called a Q ball has recently attracted a great deal of attention again. This is because it can be implemented very naturally in the super-symmetric standard model, and it was suggested that we can explain the amount of both the baryons and the dark matter of the universe simultaneously. In this short report, we will show how this scenario works well, and also whether it is consistent with observations (experiments).
