A nucleus is a many-body quantum system consisting of protons and neutrons with spin=1/2 and isospin=1/2. The structure of atomic nuclei has been investigated with a variety of of probes. It was found that the atomic nucleus is a quite unique system where independent particle and collective motions coexist. Today, in order to better understand the atomic nucleus, it becomes more important to clarify microscopic structres produced by the nucleons near the surface in search of various collective motions with large amplitudes and to investigate modifications of nucleon properties in the nuclear medium.
Nuclei are sensitive detectors in such interdisciplinary fields as cosmophysics and astrophysics. Information on nuclear structures is indispensable to determine the efficiency of detectors. In this report, we describe research activities on these subjects performed with the RCNP Ring Cyclotron.

The deficit of the solar neutrino flux, called as “solar neutrino problem, ” has been discussed for more than 30 years. The recent observations of solar neutrinos by Super-Kamiokande and SNO have given a clear evidence for neutrino oscillations as the solution of the solar neutrino problem. It was also found that the electron neutrinos are large mixture of different mass eigenstates. In this report, we present the nature of neutrinos and progress in solar neutrino physics based on the results from recent solar neutrino experiments.

A tunable coherent light source in the far-infrared region (from several hundred GHz to 10 THz) has been developed based on the mixing of two infrared laser beams. A spectrometer with this light source is successfully applied to high resolution molecular spectroscopy in the far-infrared region.

Bose-Einstein condensation of alkali atoms is different from superfluid
4He in that (1) it has hyperfine spin degrees of freedom, (2) it is a dilute Bose gas for which the weak coupling approximation is applicable, (3) it is a mesoscopic system, (4) the coupling constants and the external potential are easily controllable, and (5) there are variety of techniques to visualize the system. In the present article, we outline several methods leading to the formation of vortices in this system as well as the features of each method.

Itinerant electrons in a superconductor are bounded to form Cooper pairs. It is well known that in a conventional superconductor phonons glue those electrons. What is an elementary excitation that glues electrons in the fascinating heavy fermion superconductor UPd
2Al
3? In this article we show that superconducting pairing interaction is mediated by an exchange of magnetic excitons that are collective mode of spins in the antiferromagnetic ordered state.
