The role of geometry in physics continues to charm theories. In condensed matter physics, on the other hand, the vital role played by the quantal Berry phase has recently been recognized especially in the transport phenomena. Berry phase is the fundamental concept when the role of the geometry in quantum theory is considered. In this article, I review its basic concept, previous works, and recent advances including our own activities related to this issue.

The atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides us structural and atomic images of surfaces by detecting a force acting on a probe tip from the sample surface. By detecting a force due to a single chemical covalent bond formed between the tip and sample surface, individual atoms on the Si(111)-(7×7) structure should be observed because of its short-range characteristics. Compared with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), however, spatial resolution has been still limited. We report here highly resolved AFM imaging was achieved by preferentially detecting a covalent bonding, a force working at an atomic scale short distance. The preferential detection, realized by using a sharp tip and small oscillation amplitude, was confirmed from a fitting of the force curve with the theoretically predicted one. Oxide layer covering over the tip can be removed without tip blunting by high temperature annealing. It was found that the high temperature annealing can improve a Q-factor of the cantilever oscillation, reducing the thermal noise.

Recent observations have revealed an unexpectedly high binary fraction among the Edgeworth-Kuiper-belt objects (EKBOs). The discovered binaries are characteristic so that theories of binary asteroid formation ever known cannot explain the formation of EKBO binaries. Here we show a mechanism which naturally produces the EKBO-type binaries. Our theory implies that EKBOs were formed through gravitational instabilities of the protoplanetary dust layer.
