The solar-based energy should become a global major one at the end of this century. The intermediate between fossil and solar energies has to be filled by the fission energy. For the decisive improvement of its safety, radioactive-waste and plutonium issues, the Thorium Molten-Salt Nuclear Energy Synergetic System should be established by the use of fluid-fuel of
7LiF-BeF
2-based molten fluoride salt, as a triple functional medium for nuclear-reaction, heat-transfer and chemical-process without radiation-damage. This system is composed of simple and economical fuel-self-sustaining small power reactors and Accelerator Molten-Salt Breeders for spallation breeding. The economical extinction of radioactive-wastes will be achieved by using excess fuel (neutron) at the phase-out period of this system near the end of this century. This technology will be essential for solving global environmental and poverty issues and for the complete abolition of nuclear weapons.

Cluster of micron size fine particles placed in a plasma exhibits a new type of behavior, not expected from a system of fine particles or plasma alone. The compound system is known as a complex plasma and is characterized by a strong coupling among micron size fine particles, a potential energy much higher than the kinetic energy of fine particles. Recent advances of complex plasmas are reviewed in a context of basic physics.

We are operating a modern air shower array dedicated to searching the skies for very high-energy gamma rays at Yangbajing (4, 300 m above sea level) in Tibet, a few hours from Lhasa. This array has a threshold energy of a few TeV. When a swarm of particles from an air shower, with a few nano-lightseconds in thickness, hits the array, we can reconstruct the content of the shower as well as its direction within an accuracy of about a half of a degree. In this article, we introduce the current status of the experiment and some interesting results obtained, focusing on the astro-physics of high-energy cosmic rays.

High pressure synthesis is a powerful technique to search for new materials. Generally speaking, however, it used to be almost impossible to obtain single crystal samples of these high-pressure phases. To be reported here is the single crystal growths of various transition metal oxides by means of flux method based on the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction studies at high pressures of several Gpa.

Precise data on the cross sections, analyzing powers and polarization transfer coefficients were measured for the dp elastic scattering at 270 MeV (135 MeV/nucleon) and compared to exact Faddeev calculations with modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with the 2π exchange three-nucleon (3N) forces. Excellent fits are obtained for the cross sections and vector analyzing powers when the 3N force is included, while the fits are deteriorated for the tensor analyzing powers if the 3N force is included. A moderate fit is obtained for the polarization transfer coefficients. From these results conclusions can be drawn that (1) the 3N force is definitely needed, (2) the size of the 3N force may be adequate and (3) the spin dependent part of the 3N force may be deficient.

We have succeeded in showing that the initiation and termination of chain polymerization of unsaturated organic molecules can be controlled with a spatial precision of the order of 1 nm using a probe tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. The obtained conjugated polymer nanowire is guaranteed to contain no defect as a reaction product, and is enough long. So that it will become a suitable system for the investigation of basic physics of one dimensional conductor. It will also be useful for fabricating and interconnecting novel molecular nanoelectronic devices.
