The first Japanese infrared astronomical satellite ASTRO-F is scheduled to be launched within a few years. ASTRO-F, equipped with a cooled, 67 cm telescope, is going to carry out an allsky survey at 50-200 micron, and also to make detailed observations of selected targets at 2-200 micron. The main purposes of the ASTRO-F mission are to investigate (1) birth and evolution of galaxies at early universe, (2) birth and evolution of stars, and (3) the formation process of planetary systems.

Spin glass has been studied quite extensively for years as a typical model system of complex systems Yet, Its true nature Is not fully understood. In this article, the "chirality hypothesis" of the spin glass ordering is reviewed, with particular emphasis on the recent experimental and theoretical development. The topic includes the the nature of the replica-symmetry breaking of the spinglass state, the off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation ratio of the Heisenberg spin glass, and the anomalous Hall effect of canonical spin glass as a probe of the chiral order.

Production or mamipulation of a low emittance electron beam will become an indispensable technique to realize a thirdgeneration synchrotron source, X-ray region free-electron laser and TeV-scale linear collider in the future. It is thus essential to have a good "eye" a reliable monitor to measure its emittance. We report in this article the development of a laser wire beam profile monitor, including its principle, salient features and actual measurement procedures.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) have been regarded as promising semiconductor materials for hard X-ray and γ-ray detection. The high atomic number of the materials (Z
cd=48, Z
Te=52) gives a high quantum efficiency in comparison with Si. The large band-gap energy (E
g∼l.5 eV) allows us to operate the detector at room temperature. However, a considerable amount of charge loss In these deteclors produces a reduced energy resolution. This problem arises due to the low mobility and short lifetime of holes. Recently, significant improvements have been achieved to improve the spectral properties based on the advances in the production of crystals and in the design of electrodes. Here we present recent progress of CdTe/CdZnTe-based detector with an emphasis on our development of the high resolution CdTe diode. CdTe/CdZnTe imaging detectors and the related technology, such as hybridization method and ASICs are discussed together with application of CdTe/CdZnTe detectors In future hard X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy missions.

Recent discovery of two new mesons consisting of charm and strange quarks caused an excitement among researchers in the field of heavy mesons. Observed masses for these states deviate significantly from the predictions based on the heavy meson potential models. Subsequent studies, however, show that these deviations can be naturally explained in terms of chiral symmetry argument which must be satisfied in the quantum chromodynamics treatment of heavy mesons.

Our recent experimental results about the dynamical behavior of adhesive tape in peeling at a constant peel speed are reported. We focus our attention on spatio-temporal patterns formed by deformed adhesive in peeling on the tape. Because of the viscoelastic nature of adhesive, it is found that the patterns are classified into four types by changing both the peel speed and the stiffness of the system, which is controlled by a spring connected to the tape. We expect that we are able to grasp adhesive motion from physical point of view by understanding the mechanism for the pattern formation directly reflecting on the dynamical property of adhesive motion.
