Recently, superfluidity in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms has attracted much attention as a realization of new fermion superfluidity. In this paper, we review basic properties of this new superfluidity. We explain in detail a pairing mechanism associated with a Feshbach resonance, high superfluid phase transition temperature (T
c∼0.1T
F, where T
F is the Fermi temperature), as well as the BCS-BEC crossover phenomenon controlled by a tunable pairing interaction.

An RF synchrotron has been the indispensable device for nuclear physics and high energy physics experiments so far. Instead of this conventional accelerator, an induction synchrotron has been proposed and its demonstration is going to be done in the near future. The induction synchrotron is capable of accelerating a super-bunch of 1μ long. A new generation of proton driver or hadron collider accommodating super-bunches, which claims to increase their luminosity ten times larger, is under consideration. Key devices to realize the novel induction synchrotron are a pulse modulator and induction accelerating cavity being operated at 1MHz rep-rate. The concept and characteristics of the induction synchrotron are presented including the outline of R&D works.

We have investigated monolayer and multilayer islands of La
2@C
80, La@C
82 and La
2@C
72 grown on a hydrogen-terminated Si (100)-2×1 surface by UHV-STM. The observed La
2@C
80 molecule has a spherical shape, consistent with a recent result by synchrotron X-ray measurements. The La
2@C
72 molecules are observed by STM as ellipsoids. The energy gap for the La
2@C
80 is measured to be 1.3-1.5 eV, indicating that the I
h cage of the La
2@C<80> molecule is highly stabilized by an electron transfer from the encaged La atoms to fullerene cage. The energy gap of the La
2@C
72 is measured to be 1.0-1.2eV, suggesting that the C
72 carbon cage is stabilized by a localized electron transfer from the encaged La atoms to the fused-pentagon.

We have developed an unprecedented high-precision wave-packet (WP) interferometer with the HgAr van der Waals complex; almost 100% fringe contrast was observed as a function of the delay between two UV fs pulses tuned with attosecond stability and resolution. Using this interferometer, we have succeeded in creating arbitrary superpositions of the three vibrational eigenstates within a WP. We point out that the interference structure can be retrieved from the population information stored in the thermal ensemble of molecules even after the coherence is wiped out. All these features are quite general in WP interference and therefore provide basis for opening new perspective of coherent control in a wide variety of quantum systems.
