Topological insulators (quantum spin Hall insulators) are a new state of matter realized in two and three dimensions. They are insulating in the bulk, but have gapless edge/surface states, which are protected topologically. They are proposed to have novel properties, such as absence of backscattering, magnetoelectric effect and Majorana fermions, some of which have been experimentally observed. In this review article we explain basic properties and recent research results on theories and experiments for topological insulators.

Spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (SARPES), which analyzes energy, momentum and spin of a photoelectron, has been utilized to understand the spin-dependent electronic structures of magnetic materials. However, the low efficiency of spin analyses prevented us from obtaining spectra with high energy and momentum resolutions. In this article, we describe our new SARPES spectrometer adopting a Very-Low-Energy Electron Diffraction (VLEED) spin detector, which achieves 100 times higher efficiency than other detectors. We also present some examples of experimental results obtained by using the new SARPES spectrometer and recent topics on spin-related physics.

Proton dynamics in hydrogen-bonded systems plays crucial roles in a variety of chemical and biological processes. While it has been studied extensively by spectroscopic methods and theoretical calculations, the proton dynamics can be directly investigated by using a scanning tunneling microscope. In water clusters isolated on Cu(110), we observed hydrogen-bond rearrangements in real time, and proposed that quantum tunneling of proton is involved in the process. In this report, we present the result and also the new topic concerning hydroxyl group.

Most materials expand on heating. However, although rare, some materials contract on heating. Such negative thermal expansion materials have huge industrial merits because they can control thermal expansion of materials. Materials and physical properties as well as magnetostructural correlations behind the phenomena are briefly reviewed here for manganese antiperovskites, which are now attracting great attention since discovery of their giant negative thermal expansion in 2005.

Metallic systems with the strongest electron correlations are realized in certain rare-earth and actinide compounds whose physics are dominated by f-electrons. These materials are known as heavy fermions, so called because the effective mass of the conduction electrons is enhanced via correlation effects up to as much as several hundreds times the free electron mass. To date the electronic structure of all heavy-fermion compounds is essentially three-dimensional. Here we report on the first realization of a two-dimensional heavy-fermion system, where the dimensionality is adjusted in a controllable fashion by fabricating heterostructures using molecular beam epitaxy. The two-dimensional heavy fermion system displays striking deviations from the standard Fermi liquid low-temperature electronic properties.

For two-dimensional magnets with frustrated interactions that prevent magnetic ordering, it is believed that a state without any magnetic long-range order, called a spin liquid, may be realized in the ground state. Quasiparticles created from such a spin liquid may be different from conventional elementary excitations based on classical magnetic orders. In this article, we report theoretical results showing that various anomalous features observed in the anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4 can be explained in a unified manner in terms of quasiparticles that are not based on classical magnetic orders.
