"Message from water" is a folktale (or an occult story) which asserts that water exposed to "good" words or music forms regular and beautiful crystal while those exposed to "bad" ones hardly forms crystal. This typical "fakescience" is often misinterpreted as being scientific, and have had widespread influence over elementary education in Japan. We here summarize the current situation around "Message from water", and discuss some related issues on science and fake-science.

Single-molecule junction is a system where single molecule is bridging between two metal electrodes. It is a low dimensional nano material with two metal-molecule interfaces, and thus, we can expect appearance of novel physical properties, which are not observed in bulk systems. Single-molecule junction has also attracted wide attention due to its potential use in molecular electronics devices. In this article, we discuss the effect of metal-molecule contacts on properties of single-molecule junctions, and the interaction between phonon and conduction electron in single-molecule junctions. Finally, we briefly show examples of the application of single-molecule junctions to devices.

The AdS/CFT correspondence, which is an equivalence between N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory and superstring theory on anti-de Sitter spacetime, relates the weak-coupling physics of string theory to the strong coupling physics of gauge theories. The relation between gluon scattering amplitudes and minimal surfaces in anti-de Sitter spacetime is a new example of this correspondence. It turns out that gluon scattering amplitudes become a very interesting subject from the viewpoint of mathematical physics, because of its unexpected relationship to integrable systems such as two dimensional integrable field theories and Y-systems.

Geometrically frustrated magnets exhibit a spin-liquid-like state until much below the temperature of magnetic energy in systems instead of magnetic long-range order. A spin molecule phenomenon is one of the representative states. In a magnetically ordered phase that is supposed to eliminate frustration, however, we recently discovered several modes of molecular spin excitation levels with different shapes and energies by inelastic neutron scattering. We discuss the roots of spin molecules from this new result.

In the physics of quantum Hall effect, static (DC) conductions are usually studied. Recently Morimoto, et al. has proposed that when we shine a terahertz light to the sample we should have an "optical Hall effect", a novel concept, where the optical Hall response retains, surprisingly, step-like structures arising from localization physics in AC. The effect is predicted to be observable as a Faraday rotation of polarized lights with the relevant photon energy in THz regime. The effect has subsequently been experimentally observed by Ikebe, et al. with terahertz Faraday rotation for a two-dimensional electron system in GaAs/AlGaAs. We give a brief review both theoretically and experimentally.

The Markov chain Monte Carlo method is a versatile numerical method for integral computation and is being extensively applied across the various disciplines as a vital tool. Since the invention in 1953, this method is constantly evolving within the paradigm of the detailed balance. However, the detailed balance condition is not necessary at all. Our recent study has revealed that the convergence of estimate values is greatly improved by breaking this condition. In this report, we present our novel algorithm free from the detailed balance after introducing the Monte Carlo method.

We present superconducting receiver technologies which will allow us to conduct sensitive cosmic observations in the unexplored frequency region of the submillimeter and terahertz waves. The receiver will be implemented into the largest radio telescope in the human history, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), to achieve the highest resolution and sensitivity. The telescope, "eyes at radio wavelengths", will deliver new pictures of the unveiled universe, which are also reviewed briefly in this article.
