The Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) was established in Kobe on July 1, 2010. This new organization is responsible for operating the Next-Generation Supercomputer-named "K" after the character 京, which stands for 10 to the 16th power-and for carrying out R & D in computational science and technology. Our mission is to get the maximum potential use out of the "K computer" to propel Japan to a leading position in the world of computational science and technology. Petascale computing hardware is just around the corner. Petascale resources will enable us to enter a new era of modeling. The supercomputer is an essential tool for contemporary science and technology. The potential it offers for expanding basic research in the study of the universe, elementary particles, materials science and the life science is clear. But the supercomputer is equally essential to a wide range of advanced science and technology that is directly related to our daily lives. We are in the midst of a fierce global competition to develop and use the most advanced supercomputer. AICS will be working to further science and technology, buttress Japan's competitive edge in science, and respond to the needs of both the Japanese people and the global community. Our vision is for ACIS that will become the Mecca of computational science, a converging point of global knowledge attracting scientists from around the world. We hope to produce exciting results that will amaze the world and the Japanese people.

In these strategic fields, the K computer project will bring to a realization of quantitative descriptions of biological systems and deliver comprehension and predictions of biological phenomena through a computer science-based analysis of the massive amounts of data generated by state-of-the-art measurements and arge-scale simulations that will first be made possible using its computational power. These predictions will then be applied to drug discovery and medical design.

Large-scale natural disasters, such as typhoons, localized torrential rains, earthquakes and tsunamis, threaten the society and economic activities with widespread impacts. Therefore, prompt and efficient measures are required for those disasters. Because field experiments cannot be done to evaluate influences of those disasters and verify the measures for disaster prevention and reduction, the measures should be examined by large-scale simulations using supercomputers. In Strategic Field 3, we will carry out simulations of those natural disasters by using the next-generation supercomputer, "Kei", in order to contribute to the measures for actual disaster prevention and reduction as well as to stimulate the basic research. For that purpose, we will develop the computational science and technology system for managing the computer resources efficiently.

"Kei"-supercomputer is planned to start its full-scale operation in about one year and a half. With this, High Performance Computing (HPC) is most likely to contribute not only to further progress in basic and applied sciences, but also to bringing about innovations in various fields of industries. It is expected to substantially shorten design time, drastically improve performance and/or liability of various industrial products, and greatly enhance safety of largescale power plants. In this article, six research themes, which are currently being prepared in this strategic research field, "industrial innovations" so as to use "Kei"-supercomputer as soon as it starts operations, will be briefly described regarding their specific goals and break-through that they are expected to bring about in industries. It is also explained how we have determined these themes. We are also planning several measures in order to promote widespread use of HPC including "Kei"-supercomputer in industries, which will also be elaborated in this article.
