Colloidal dispersions, suspensions of small solid particles in a liquid, are an important member of soft matter. Their dynamics and rheological behavior are strongly influenced by hydrodynamic interactions between particles, but their analytical treatment is very difficult because of the long-range, many-body nature. Here we explain a principle of fluid particle dynamics method, which we deveopled to deal with interparticle hydrodynamic interactions properly. Taking gelation of colloidal particles and electrophoresis of charged colloids as examples, we consider dynamic many-body coupling between colloids and a liquid and its consequences.

Lattice defects often deteriorate properties of inorganic materials and their essential nature does not appear. In ferroelectrics, a small amount of defects plays an important role in polarization switching, but defects with a relatively high density lead to various problems. Recently, Bi-based perovskite ferroelectrics have attracted much attention as a Pd-free material from the environmental and economical points of view. However, high-quality single crystals of Bi-based ferroelectrics have not been obtained over the past 60 years because of the defect-related problems, and their fundamental properties are shrouded in a veil. In the present article, the crystal growth technique under high oxygen pressure we have developed is shown to be effective for growing high-quality Bi-based ferroelectric single crystals. In addition, the background to the development is briefly introduced.

It is well known that B-site randomness contributes to the appearance of relaxor phenomena in the lead-based complex perovskite Pb(B'B")O_3. But the microscopic mechanism of the effect of B-site randomness on the systems has not been understood yet. Among the Pb(B'B")O_3 systems, Pb(In_<1/2>Nb_<1/2>)O_3 (PIN) has drawn much attention because it can be in the antiferroelectric (AFE), ferroelectric (FE), or relaxor state depending on B-site randomness. We review the recent progress in our understanding of the effect of B-site randomness on Pb(In_<1/2>Nb_<1/2>)O_3 (PIN) from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints.

Alongside of the proton collider of LHC, CERN, R & D of International Linear Collider (ILC), an electron positron collider at TeV energy, is being conducted towards a completion of Technical Design Report in 2012 through international cooperation. High Energy Accelerator Research Organization carries out research and development intensively regarding super conducting cavities and nanometer final focus system. This article describes the latter recent status, i.e. completion of the beam line (ATF2) and results in the first year operation.
