More than 30 years have been passed since the prediction was made for the existence of the superheavy elements (SHE). It is now reported that SHE are synthesized in the laboratories. In this manuscript, we explain what SHE are and then, by looking back history, we discuss the purpose and the interest of the search for SHE. The present status of the experiments of synthesizing SHE is reviewed. We also discuss our theoretical study of the reaction process and present the prediction of the evaporation residue cross section of SHE via heavy-ion fusion reaction. Future perspectives are also given.

ITER is an international joint program for the next-step fusion experimental reactor which aims to demonstrate extended/ steady-state fusion burn of deuterium-tritiumritium plasmas and to demonstrate the fusion technologies in an integrated manner as well as to perform integrated testing of components required to utilize fusion energy for practical purposes. On the basis of the recent scientific and engineering achievements in the world-wide tokamak research, the Engineering Design Activities for nine years were fully completed in July 2001. The so-called compact ITER with a finite Q ≥ 10 was proposed and its detailed engineedng design was developed along the line of world fusion research. Large scale engineering research and development were completed for superconducting coils, remote-maintenance technology, etc.. The four ITER Parties (Japan, theEuropean Union, the Soviet Federation, and Canada) have initiated the govemmental negotiations for the joint implementation of ITER.

ITER is the first experimental fusion device with long burning of deuterium-tritium plasmas. The most significant advancement of ITER from the existing fusion devices is that ITER deals with fusion reaction products-namely, high-energy alpha-particles and neutrons. The alpha-particles will bring about many research topics in fusion plasma physics. Likewise, the high-energy fusion neutrons will necessitate comprehensive technological investigations into the development of the “blanket” that is to be installed around a fusion plasma and which interacts with the neutrons. In this review, the following are discussed: 1) new physics issues expected to come about from the ITER plasma as an example of a complex system and 2) the engineering and physical issues in the development of the blanket that is to be used as a means of energy conversion (from high-energy neutrons to thermal energy), tritium fuel breeding, and radiation shielding.

The study of angular correlation patterns in photo double ionization (PDI) of helium has attracted great interest because one can obtain important information about the electron correlation of continuum electrons in the PDI. However, it spent a long time to get the first experimental data in PDI of helium due to the experimental difficulties. In this report, we explain achirality on the angular correlation patterns in PDI of helium using our experimental data.

Recently we have studied laser cooling and trapping of rare-earth ytterbium (Yb) atoms. So far, we have achieved magneto-optical trapping and optical dipole-force trapping of cold and dense Yb atoms. We plan to use the Yb atoms for the test of time-reversal symmetry through searching for the electric-dipole moment, and also for the study of Bose-Einstein condensation, Fermidegeneracy, and its mixture.
