M2-branes are two-dimensional fundamental objects in M-theory, the unifying theory of string theories. No constructive definition of M-theory is known, and direct quantization of M2-branes has not succeeded. One of interesting properties of M2-branes is the behavior of the free energy. The AdS/CFT predicts that the free energy of N coincident M2-branes is proportional to N^<3/2> for large N. Recently, this behavior of the free energy is reproduced by the ABJM model, a three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory proposed as a low-energy effective theory of M2-branes. M2-branes, the ABJM model, and the method of computing the free energy are reviewed in this article.

Neutrino oscillation is one of the hottest topics in recent experimental particle physics. Neutrino mixing angle, θ_<13>, is an important parameter and has a big impact on how experimental and theoretical studies advance in the future. The value, however, had not been measured for many years until 2010. In these two years from 2011 to 2012, the value has been measured by several experiments. It is a significant milestone in elementary particle physics that a finite value is obtained for θ_<13>. We review the reactor based neutrino oscillation experiments which measure θ_<13>.

Quantum gates implement unitary operations acting on qubits and are fundamental ingredients in the quantum circuit model of quantum information processing. To design quantum gates robust against random noise and systematic error is essential in quantum information processing. It has been already proposed to use combinations of elementary gates, which go under the name of "composite pulses", to implement high precision gates in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments. In this paper, we introduce such composite quantum gates and show how they attain high error/noise tolerance by nesting two different types of compotise pulses. Relation between geometric phases and robustness of composite pulses is also discussed.

Repulsive particles always show the emergence of solidity when compressed rapidly. The solidification of particles which diffuse thermally is called the glass transition, while that of non-Brownian particles is the jamming transition. These two transitions are remarkably similar and sometimes considered to be the same. However, because two transitions have been studied in different models respectively, there was an ambiguity in their comparison. We studied these two transitions in the same model and revealed that they are actually distinct phenomena.
