Very little paper have been published in Japan on the driving pressure developed by coal in coke ovens. For the measurement of the driving pressure, the movable wall oven is most suitable, therefore the oven with two-side-heating was designed and constructed.
1) Miike coal, which has very high expansion property when heated in small retort, is carbonized in cylindrical retort of various diameter, at various conditions. This experiment indicates, in any cases, coal layer does not expand when the dia-meter is larger than 130mm.
2) Considering the above results and heating condition in industrial coke oven, dimention of the oven is determined as follow, 170mm in width, 490mm in height, 430mm in length, and 22.5kg of coal sample was charged in the oven.
3) The standard deviation of the driving pressure measured by the oven is only 0.002kg/cm
2, while the reproducibility of the result by Koppers is 0.02kg/cm
2.
4) Coal samples were charged in the oven of 11006C, 750°C, 500°C and room temperature and driving pressure generated in above experiments were measured.
