    -Studies of coal structure and basic properties carried out by A. Baba. H. Honda, K. Inouye and K. Higuchi at the Resources Research Institute (formerly the Fuel Research Institute) were surveyed, to whom the Fuel Society Medal for 1955 was awarded. Those investigations had been required by the need of sufficient utilization of coal in postwar Japanese industry particularly in blast-furnace coke manufacture and production of organic chemicals from low-rank coals. The organo-chemical study of lignite and humic acid, magneto-chemical and X-ray diffraction studies of coal and carbonization, and Theological properties of coal were outlined.

    The author set up his enterprise utilizing the experiences in his life in the former Navy. He noticed the cheap price and stable supply of natural gas in Nii-gata as the raw material for chemical industry. The synthesis of methanol is now opera-ted as the first system of his company, and as the second system the synthesis of ammonia is planned and now started. The prices of synthetic chemicals of home made are 20 to 30 per cent dearer than international prices. Regarding this point the author emphasizes the necessity of large scale of processes, high level of technique and rationa-liaztion of management.

    -After describing shortly the present situation of the Japanese coking indusr try, the processes of the manufacture of blast furnace coke from weakly-coking or non-coking coals are reviewed.
    In this country, during last decades, processes of blending semi-coke, coke-breeze or oxydized coal, Bajuntan process, two-stages coking process were experimented in the pilot plant, and some of them had been put into practice.
    Recently, in Europe, the Burstlein (SOVACO) and ferro-coke processes, as well as the low shaft furnace operation are attractive and the outline of these processes is introduced.

    -This report describes about an improvement of the method hitherto published. The 80% sulphuric acid method for determination of the olefinic content in. gasoline was pursued, and its method was established concretely.
    It was found that limit content of removing olefinic hydrocarbons by this method was 5%. Then entolefinic oil was nitrated to nitro-aromatic hydrocarbons with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid. And it was received from the experimental results that quan-tities of the nitrating mixture and 91% sulphuric acid, which could remove nitro-aroma-tic hydrocarbons in nitrated oil, were effected on the aromatic content in gasoline. Thus the method was somewhat improved.

    -The author measured the magnetic susceptibility of the Japanese crude mineral oil and from the relation ship between volume magnetic susceptibility and mag-netic correlation index (MI) he classified the crude into four. Investigating the relati-onships between magnetic susceptbility and specific gravity, viscosity, residual carbon, freezing point, flash point, distillation test, etc. he further itemized them of which he described the characteristics, distributions of the crude in the point of oil layer, oil field, district and stratum respectively.
