Manufacture of smokeless coke ball from poor coal powder for gasification or domestic use by Disco process was studied. As poor coal powders, Yamano-and Taga-wa-Senseki-natural coke-and coal sludge of Miike coal washing plant were used. Exper-iments were carried out by the Fischer-Glund rotary retort.
Peripheral speed of 23m/min., charge of 5kg of coal and slow heating at about360°C for about30min. gave the best results. Moisture and ash in coal had little effects. Sen-sekies crushed under 8meshes were suitable. Blending the hard pitch was effective. Airing was effective to regulate the size of coke ball. Section of coke balls by Rose process were observed and process of lumping the coal powder was discussed.
