Town gas is much different from synthetic gas in the object of its use and gas composition, but there is no essential difference between both from the point of gasification of solid and liquid fuel.
The author has given the outline of the progress of gasification of coal from the oldest Mond gas plant to recent gasification processes of coal such as the Lurgi high pressure process and the Koppers-Totzek process, and of some important gasification. processes of petroleumwhich have now been used. He has lastly concluded that the most suitable gasification processes of coal in Japan, considering the properties and amount of Japanese coal, are the Lurgi high pressure method for town gas and the fluidized gasification process of fine coal such as the Koppers-Totzek method for synt-heticgas.
