It was emphasized that the rationalization of coal miningindustry will be wholly accomplished by complete utilization of mined coal, besides the modernization of mining technology itself.When the chemical technology coopera-tes with the mining technology, the mining industry as a whole will enter into a new epoch.The following possibilities were suggested with the data in foreign and domestic investigations:(1)degassing from seam and utilization of the gas, (2)collecting and utilization of settled coal slurry, (3)utilization of refuse, and(4) preparation of coal and exhaustive utilization of prepared coal.New develope-ments in the utilization of prepared coal was further suggested in reviewing the recent ievestigations on carbonization, solvent extraction, oxidation, hydrogenation and carbonaceous materials from coal.

An aspect on the mechanism of coal formation and coal structure was given from the artificial coal experiments which have been carried out by the authors.Results of the artificial coal studies from components in plants (cellulose, lignin etc.) were summarized and the possible changes of the components in coal formation were disscussed.A special consideration was tried on the change of cellulose which has been supposed as the origin of bitumens.The chemical struct-ures of coal so far proposed were also reviewed.

We have investigated the liquid oxidation of kerosene passing air with various catalysts at the temperature of 100°C or 150°C. Catalytic action of CuO, Pb, PbO, PbO
2, SnO
2 and organic salts of lead or manganese were more effective than others.The oxidation exceedingly proceeded above the temperature of 120°C. Among the oxidation products, alcohol was predominant and much ketone have produced when oxidation is violent.Considering these results, the mechanism of oxidation has been discussed by the formation of peroxide and decomposition of this on the catalysts.From our experiments, it was known that n-paraffin is less oxidized than naphthene and naphthene ring is not destroyed by oxidation.
