    We investigated malnutrition among out-patients who called at Prof. lizuka's Clinic for a period of 5 years, 1943-1947. The result was as follows:
    1) The rate of Malnutrition was 5.9%. In 1943 the rate was the lowest;2.41%, in 1945 the highest; 8.05%.
    2) The rates of the edematous type and the intermediate. type were the lowest in 1943, and the highest in 1945. The rate of the emaciated type was the highest in 1944, and then decreased year by year.
    3) Sex: The proportion of males to females was 1.3 to 1. 6.13% of male patients and 5,69% of female patients had malnutrition.
    4) Season; In 1944 and 1946 the highest incidence was in Spring and Summer; in 1943, 45 and 47 the highest incidence was during the cold season. The highest incidence in all years was from October to December, 1945.
    5) Age; The rate of malnutrition was higher in the older age group and the edematous type appeared more frequently in the older age, the lowest rate occurred in the 20 to 30 year age group, but the rate was comparatively high in those under 20 years of age.
    6) Subjective findings; chief findings were languidness, weariness. heart accelaration, insomnia, headache, heaviness of feet, paraesthesia of legs, stiff-shoulder, night-sweats, vertigo etc. The appetite was almost normal; stools were usually normal, too. Menms were abnormal in 13/-1/2 of the cases after 1944. Urinary findings were frequency, polyuria and oliguria.
    7) Objective findings;(a), edema appeared more frequently over the face.(b) the temperature of the body was usually normal; 15.8-28.5% were less than 36°C.(c) the pulse was usually normal, too. but there was bradycardia in a few,(d) there were fewer. patients with normal patellar reflexes.
    8) Anamnesis; these patients gave a history of the folio wing illnesses in order of frequency: tuberculosis, beriberi, urogenital discases, diseases of the respiratory organs other than tuberculosis, neuralgia, rheumatism and parasitic diseases.
    9) Employment; the highest numbers were without employment; then followed off iceworkers, laborores and students.

    I investigated the form, the speed of Capillary stream, the changes of subpapillar venous plexus, and the pigmentation of the basilar part in Sulcus subungualis on left ring finger.
    I measured the width and the lengh of Capillary by ocular Micrometer, Adrenalin was used locally as a solution of 1: 2000 or 1: 5000 Adrenalin Glycerin, and subcutaneously as 0.1cc of 1: 1000 HCl-Adrenalin per kilo-gram body weight, The result was as follows.
    By the treatment of adrenalin, venous and arterial capillaries of skin contracted, the speed of blood stream became slow and the pigmentation of basilar part became lighter. These changes were proportional to concentration of adrenalin, and were stronger in subcutaneous application than in local application.
    The reaction of adrenalin was stronger in man than in woman.

    I studied the relation between ovarium and thyroid gland preparation to intermediary metabolism of protein in tissues and blood by the KJO3 methode.
    When I gave subcutaneously ovarium preparation (“Ovahornaon” 1000 units per Kilo gram body weight daily for a week) or thyroid gland preparation (“Thyradin” 1 cc per Kilo gram body weight for four days) and took the material in the early Morning of the next day, and then the intermediate of protein metabolism in blood, liver and adrenal increased in both cases and one of adrenal increased very much by the treatment of “Thyradin.”

    The number of these diseases which I could study was twentoy in all. Ten of them exophthalmic goiter, seven of them toxic goiter, simple goiter was one, and nodural goiter was two. About nodural goiter I measured normal tissue for the control.
    As for respiration rate (QO2) exophthalmic goiter and also toxic goiter are high, simple goiter and the control are low, Simple goiter is equal normal fissure, but I can't say every time exophthalmic goiter is higher than that of toxic goiter, because some of toxic goiter is higher than that of exophthalmic goiter.
    So that I made up a respitation type for example and found at all time the oxygen consumption was very variable about thyroidtissue. In respect of this respiration type I could differ. exophthalmic goiter from toxic goiter clearly.
    Apparatus Barcraft, medium phosphate solution, slice of thyroidgland about 80mg drying weight are used and measured accuarately the difference of the manometer which occured during five minutes.
    I found following phenomena:
    1) At the first period of respiration type the consumption of exophthalmic goiter is lower and after regular interval becomes higher consumption, and, on the contrary toxic goiter at first higher and falls down quickly. Simple goiter and two normal tissue are not so variable, slowly fall down.
    2) By the microscopic observation of the epitheliums, when it is hyperplasia, the respiration rate is high and hypoplasia low. And when follicle containes a plenty of colloid droplets the consumption is also high, however the opitheliums is not hyperplasia.
    3) Determination of the respiration rate is connected with relation between the amount of medium and tissue.
    4) By addition of inorganic iodide the follicle cannot make thyreoglobulin in the epitheliums, but iodide does not disturb to make up thyroxin from the thyreoglobulin, colloid droplets which was stored in the follicle, and I think it is true that surviving thyroidtissue is always stimulating itself by its own secretory function.
    5) There is no relation between tissue respiration of the thyroidgrand and basal metabolism rate.
