We investigated malnutrition among out-patients who called at Prof. lizuka's Clinic for a period of 5 years, 1943-1947. The result was as follows:
1) The rate of Malnutrition was 5.9%. In 1943 the rate was the lowest;2.41%, in 1945 the highest; 8.05%.
2) The rates of the edematous type and the intermediate. type were the lowest in 1943, and the highest in 1945. The rate of the emaciated type was the highest in 1944, and then decreased year by year.
3) Sex: The proportion of males to females was 1.3 to 1. 6.13% of male patients and 5,69% of female patients had malnutrition.
4) Season; In 1944 and 1946 the highest incidence was in Spring and Summer; in 1943, 45 and 47 the highest incidence was during the cold season. The highest incidence in all years was from October to December, 1945.
5) Age; The rate of malnutrition was higher in the older age group and the edematous type appeared more frequently in the older age, the lowest rate occurred in the 20 to 30 year age group, but the rate was comparatively high in those under 20 years of age.
6) Subjective findings; chief findings were languidness, weariness. heart accelaration, insomnia, headache, heaviness of feet, paraesthesia of legs, stiff-shoulder, night-sweats, vertigo etc. The appetite was almost normal; stools were usually normal, too. Menms were abnormal in 13/-1/2 of the cases after 1944. Urinary findings were frequency, polyuria and oliguria.
7) Objective findings;(a), edema appeared more frequently over the face.(b) the temperature of the body was usually normal; 15.8-28.5% were less than 36°C.(c) the pulse was usually normal, too. but there was bradycardia in a few,(d) there were fewer. patients with normal patellar reflexes.
8) Anamnesis; these patients gave a history of the folio wing illnesses in order of frequency: tuberculosis, beriberi, urogenital discases, diseases of the respiratory organs other than tuberculosis, neuralgia, rheumatism and parasitic diseases.
9) Employment; the highest numbers were without employment; then followed off iceworkers, laborores and students.
