Environmental effect of acid deposition on some chemical properties of soils was studied in Mt. Oyama and its surroundings, Fudakake and Ichinosawa, in the southwest of the Kanto Plains. The average values of soil pH (H
2O) in Mt. Oyama, Fudakake, and Ichinosawa were 5.74, 5.89, and 5.94, respectively. In Mt. Oyama, the values of pH (H
2O) and pH (KC1) of soils tended to increase with increasing altitude, whereas total concentration of water soluble components had a maximum value at altitude between 700-1000 m. At this altitude, nitrate ion was accumulated because of deposited nitrateion and nitric acid formed by the nitrification from deposited ammonium ion, and the nitric acid is assumed to leach calcium and magnesium from soil.
