Tocopherols (Toc), especially a-Toc, are distributed in nature. They were found in the photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic tissues of higher plants and algae. But they have not so far been identified in microorganisms. So, we investigated the existence of Toc in microorganisms and they were found only in unicellular algae. Instead of Toc, some unknown reducible substances were found in yeasts, moulds and bacteria, especially photosynthetic bacteria contained large amount of them. It was considered that the occurrence of Toc might be strongly related to existence of chloroplast. Key Words: Tocopherol, Microorganism, Alga, Chloroplast.
