    The writer studied the paleomagnetism of volcanic rocks, distributed in the northeastern part of Yatsugatake Volcanic Chain (Lat. 36°N, Long. 138.5°E) in central Japan. This volcanic chain is situated in the Fossa Magna and has very interesting geological problems. He discovered the reversely magnetized rocks from the lowermost lava flows of the Yatsugatake volcanic deposits, most of which have westward declinations. Virtual geomagnetic north poles obtained from the orientation of rock magnetism are located near the present geographical north pole, and there is no pole which is distributed in the low latitude region. At one locality, the Oishigawa scoria beds are situated between two reversely magnetized flows, with 7 meter intervals, but all of them are normally magnetized. This problem will be solved after stability tests. Lastly paleomagnetic correlation with some Quaternary deposits of other regions are shown by the writer.

    Some of submarine banks located on the continental borderland in the Japan Sea include Yamato Bank, Kita-Oki Bank, Oki Bank, and Hakusan-Se. Samples collected there from suggest that the basement of the continental borderland possibly consists of metamorphic rocks and plutonic rocks, the former being represented by meta-diorite, and the latter by microcline granite. Some of them are distributed as pebbles over the banks, while the others are collected as broken pieces of the basement. The meta-diorite referred to above is correlated with the so-called amphybolite schist distributed among the Hida mountains in central Japan. The granite is correlated with that of the late Cretaceous period found in San'in district, northwestern part of the country. These basements are covered with acidic volcanic rocks or welded tuff of the late Cretaceanous that show intrusion of submarine volcanic rocks among them. The volcanic rocks present correlation with alkali basalt which mainly occurs in San'in district and the Oki Islands. Geological features of the submarine banks in the Japan Sea adjacent to the northeastern region of the country resemble terrestrial geology of their neighborhood. They are mainly composed of the suhmarine volcanic rocks of the Miocene related with the so-called "Green Tuff". Intrusion of the Quarternary volcanic rocks is evident among them. It may be added here that nodules of barite are distributed over the banks in this part of the Japan Sea.

    There have been many fish scales from the Neogene Tertiary deposits reported in Japan. However, these fish scales have not been studied critically, and only been treated as "fish scale" or "Sardinops sp." From the Bessyo formation in Central Shinano the scales have also been found abundantly. In this paper, we have explained the morphological characters of these scales, especially through the ones. According to our observations, they are divided into 18 types, of which 14 types very nearly coincide with the Recent ones and can be determined of each family or genus, while the other 4 types cannot. The formers are Clupeidae, Coryphaenoididae, Myctophidae, Sparidae. Scombresocidae, Gadidae, Scombropidae, Gobiidae and Halosaulidae. They were found from the drinage area of the Kangawa at Iseyama, Ueda City.

    Phlogopite from Hoshi mine Korea was used as the starting material of the experiment. This specimen was pulverized on an agate morter, and was mixed with powder of aluminium sulfate (Al_2(SO_4)_318H_2O) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO_3) in various proportions (phlogopite 0.15g, magnesium carbonate 0〜0.1g and aluminium sulfate 0〜1 g). The mixed powder was put into a small silver crucible and set over water level in the autoclave of the Morey type, and heated at 300℃ (120 atms water vapor) for 3 hours. After the heat duration, the autoclave was cooled to room temperatures. The heating rate is 2℃ a minute and the cooling time was about 10 hours. After cooling, the reaction product in the crucible was washed with distilled water to remove water-soluble material and the residure was studied by X-ray diffraction method and other mineralogical techniques. As a result of this, various kinds of clay minerals could be confirmed along with alunite in range of relative proportions of aluminium sulfate and magnesium carbonate, and an interstratified mineral could be confirmed. Other clay minerals obtained are montmorillonite, vermiculite and septechlorite. The interstratified mineral obtained is geometrically close to the regular mixed-layer mineral of mica (10A)-montmorillonite (15A), but is partially different from such the mineral, that is the 10A mica layer is expandable by the treatment with ethylene glycol. It can be considered that the interstratified mineral was formed from phlogopite due to a leaching of interlayer cation (K^+) at intervals of one layer.

    Τ.Γ. Ильинаが最近に記載図示された,コーカサス・ペルム系のWaagenophyllidae科のサソゴについて,鑑定の結果を訂正し,属および種の同定をやり直した.われわれのみるところではWaagenophyilum (W.) wengchengenseはNeoschwagerina帯に対比される・また,Ipciphyllum及びWentzelophyllumの層準は,Гнищикий階の名の下に一括されているが,恐らく2群帯に区別さるべきものであろう.Wentzelophyllum volzi, YatsengiaなどはPseudofusulina帯に, IpciphyllumはParafusulina帯に対比されるであろう. なお,コーカサスにおいてWaagenophyllidae動物区の範囲が正確に定まった点で, Ильинаの論文は意義がある.

    フリーゲル教授は最近アフガニスタンからWaagenophyllidae科に属するサンゴを記載された.同地域にこの種のサンゴの発見さる可きことは,充分に予期されたところであるが,従来は全く未報告であったから,この発見は特筆に値すると考える.しかしながら,氏の鑑定には,かなり誤りがふくまれているようだ.それでその理由を略記し,種の同定をやり直しておいた.すなわち氏のWentzelellites molengraaffi (GERTH)としたものは,むしろW. senni MINATO et KATOに近く,molengraaffiはWentzelellitesよりはLonsdaleiastraeaに属さすべきものである.氏がIranophyllum carcinophylloidesとしたものはIranophyllumの新種であろう.carcinophylloidesは,むしろPavastehphyllum(Sakamotosawanella) MINATO et KATOに属さるべきもので,別属である.他のIranophyllumもそれぞれ新種であろう.また氏が分類上の位置不明とした標本は,恐らくIranophyllum?と考える.以上のサンゴはKotal-e-Tera峠のペルム系中部からエルべン教授により採集されたもので,その時代はNeoschwagerina帯とみるのが至当である.フリーゲルは他に三畳系の直下からWaagenophyllum indicumを記載している.これの時代は恐らくYabeina帯または,最上部ペルム紀であろう.ちなみに,フリーゲルの報告は1965年1月に,私どものWaagenophyllidaeのモノグラは4月に出版された.
