Urigal (Cytal) is a safe, nonhemolytic irrigating medium which is helpful to prevent post-resection hemoglobinemia and oliguria syndrome. We have recently used Urigal in a series of 20 patients who had transurethral resection of the prostate or bladder neck. Post-resection hyponatremia of mild degree was experienced in three cases, but were successfully managed by intravenous administration of hypertonic saline. In an exceptional case, in which about four litters of sterile distilled water was used during the resection with Urigal, a hemoglobinemia of moderate degree (210mg/dl) developed followed by mild oliguria syndrome postoperatively. However, satisfactory results were obtained in the rest of the cases without causing any serious complications. In conclusion, we believe that Urigal is a reliable irrigating medium for transurethral surgery to minimize undesirable complications.
